Ask the Optician: Five Things I Tell Almost Every Customer
Introduction
After more than 35 years as an optician, I've noticed that many people ask the same questions. Whether you're buying your first pair of glasses or you've worn them for decades, there are a few pieces of advice that can make a real difference to your vision, comfort and the life of your glasses.
Here are five things I find myself telling customers almost every day.
1. Don't replace your glasses if you only need new lenses
If your frames still fit well and you're happy with how they look, there's often no need to buy a completely new pair. Replacing the lenses can update your prescription, improve clarity and add the latest lens technology while keeping the frames you already love.
2. Clean your lenses properly
Avoid tissues, paper towels or clothing, as they can leave fine scratches over time. A microfibre cloth and lens cleaning spray are the safest way to keep your lenses clear.
3. UV protection isn't just for holidays
Ultraviolet rays reach your eyes all year round, even on cloudy days. Quality prescription sunglasses or tinted lenses with proper UV protection help protect your eyes whenever you're outdoors.
4. Don't ignore small prescription changes
If driving signs seem less sharp, reading takes more effort or your eyes feel tired, it may be time for an eye examination. Small changes in prescription can have a surprisingly big impact on comfort.
5. Choose lenses to suit your lifestyle
The "best" lenses are the ones that suit how you actually use your glasses. If you spend long hours driving, using screens or enjoying the outdoors, there are coatings and lens options that can make everyday vision more comfortable.
