Autumn Has Arrived – And the Way We Use Our Glasses Is Changing Too
You may have noticed something different when visiting the Reglaze Glasses Direct website this week.
We've changed our imagery for autumn and winter.
That's partly because we like keeping the website fresh, but there's another reason too.
The change of season genuinely changes the conditions in which we use our glasses.
The long, bright evenings are disappearing. The sun sits lower in the sky. Roads are wetter. Mornings are darker. Headlights become part of the daily commute again.
And over the next few months, many of us will spend considerably more time looking through our glasses in challenging light.
So, while we've been getting our website ready for autumn, perhaps it's worth asking:
Are your glasses ready for it too?
The Same Glasses – Very Different Conditions
Think about a typical summer evening.
There's plenty of natural light, visibility is generally good and you might still be outside at eight or nine o'clock without really thinking about darkness.
Fast-forward a few months.
You leave work and it's dark. The road is wet. Streetlights, illuminated signs and headlights are everywhere.
Your prescription hasn't necessarily changed.
Your glasses haven't changed.
But the environment you're looking through them in certainly has.
That's when things you barely noticed during summer can suddenly become much more obvious.
Fine scratches.
Surface reflections.
Smudges.
An older coating that's beginning to deteriorate.
Even a prescription that isn't quite as crisp as it once was.
The Low Autumn Sun
Darkness isn't the only challenge.
Anyone who drives regularly will know just how awkward the low autumn and winter sun can be.
At certain times of day it can sit directly in your field of vision, and reflections from wet roads can make things even more uncomfortable.
Sunglasses can still be incredibly useful long after summer has disappeared.
Polarised prescription sunglasses, in particular, can help reduce reflected glare from surfaces such as wet roads.
And for people who don't want to keep swapping between pairs, photochromic options such as Transitions® can provide another solution for changing daylight conditions.
Autumn doesn't mean putting the sunglasses away.
Sometimes it means using them differently.
Then Come the Darker Evenings
As daylight disappears, another aspect of your lenses becomes increasingly noticeable:
reflections.
We've recently talked about our Ultima+ coating, and autumn is probably one of the best times to understand why a good lens coating matters.
Anti-reflection treatment helps reduce reflections from the surfaces of your lenses.
During the day you may barely think about them.
Against the darkness of an autumn evening, however, bright light sources such as headlights and streetlights can make lens reflections much more apparent.
Ultima+ isn't simply about anti-reflection either.
It combines anti-reflection, anti-scratch and anti-smudge properties with hydrophobic protection, UV protection, blue-light filtering and an easy-clean surface.
And some of those other features become particularly useful at this time of year too.
Rain, Smudges and Constant Cleaning
Welcome back to British autumn.
Rain on the lenses.
Into the car.
Glasses mist up.
Wipe them.
Back outside.
More rain.
Wipe them again.
Fingerprints.
Another wipe.
It's very easy to find yourself cleaning your glasses far more frequently during autumn and winter.
As we discussed in our recent article, cleaning itself can eventually contribute to coating wear — particularly when lenses are cleaned incorrectly or abrasive particles are repeatedly rubbed across the surface.
That's where the hydrophobic and easy-clean properties of a quality coating become particularly useful.
Water is encouraged to bead rather than simply spread across the surface, while fingerprints and contaminants are easier to remove.
The easier a lens is to clean, the less work you need to do to clean it.
And potentially, the less unnecessary rubbing the coating receives over its lifetime.
Have Your Glasses Survived Another Summer?
There's another reason autumn is a good time to inspect your glasses.
They've just been through summer.
Holidays, beaches, sun cream, swimming pools, hot cars, dust and perhaps several months of being pushed onto the top of your head every five minutes.
Take your glasses off and hold them towards a light.
Don't look through them.
Look at them.
You might be surprised by what you see.
Are there fine scratches across the surface?
Do the lenses still look perfectly clear after cleaning?
Are there areas where the coating looks different?
Are your sunglasses still in good condition?
And when was the prescription in them last updated?
What About That Spare Pair?
Autumn is also a good time to think about your second pair.
If you rely on your glasses every day, having another usable pair makes sense.
But there's little point having an “emergency pair” sitting in a drawer if the prescription is three prescriptions out of date.
You may already own the perfect spare pair.
They could simply need new lenses.
The same applies to an older pair of prescription sunglasses or a favourite frame that was retired when your prescription changed.
The frame hasn't necessarily reached the end of its life just because the lenses have.
You Don't Have to Buy New Glasses for a New Season
This is where reglazing makes so much sense.
The traditional answer to a prescription change is often another complete pair of glasses.
New lenses.
New frames.
Everything replaced.
But if you're happy with the frames you already own, why replace them?
At Reglaze Glasses Direct, we can fit new prescription lenses into your existing frames, subject to the frame being suitable for reglazing.
That could mean straightforward single-vision lenses, varifocals, bifocals, Transitions®, polarised sunglasses or lenses with options such as Ultima+.
You choose what you actually need.
There's a Sustainability Argument Too
Autumn is traditionally a season when we start replacing things.
New coat. New shoes. New wardrobe.
But glasses don't necessarily have to join that list.
If a frame is still in good condition, still fits properly and you still enjoy wearing it, extending its life makes sense.
There's less waste, you avoid buying something unnecessarily, and you get to continue wearing the frame you chose in the first place.
Sometimes the most sustainable purchase is simply not replacing the part that doesn't need replacing.
Our Website Has Changed. Your Frames Don't Have To.
So yes, we've given the Reglaze Glasses Direct website an autumn/winter makeover.
You'll see warmer colours, seasonal landscapes and imagery reflecting the months ahead.
But there's a nice contradiction at the heart of it.
We can change the look of our website every season.
You don't have to change your glasses every season.
If your favourite frames are still doing their job, keep them.
Instead, think about the part you're actually looking through.
Is your prescription current?
Are the lenses scratched?
Would a better coating make them easier to live with?
Would Transitions® suit the changing light?
Could your sunglasses do with an updated prescription?
Could an old pair become a useful second pair again?
Autumn is a surprisingly good time to take stock.
Keep the frames you love. Change what you look through.
And while you're thinking about it, take a look at our new autumn/winter website.
You might notice we've changed quite a bit.
The one thing we haven't changed is what we've always believed: if you love your frames, you shouldn't have to replace them just because your lenses need updating.
